Benito Huerta opened Cinco De Mayo on Broadway in 2002, three years after opening a supermarket on Park Avenue by the same name in 1999.

There are also restaurant locations in Bloomingdale and Waldwick.

Food is made fresh while customers watch from one of 10 counter seats or from the few tables tucked around what was once a diner.

Authenticity is the main ingredient, noticeable in menu options that are no match for typical Mexican fare in America.

Yelpers, who give the restaurant many five-star reviews for eat-in, take-out and delivery, rave over the Mexican tongue, beef head and mole sauce.

The guacamole and salsa were also mentioned as outstanding and always fresh.

Diners say that the food is delicious and inexpensive and many report they are repeat customers of the small, storefront eatery.

Employee Lelea Espanoca said sopes and quesadillas are the most popular items on the menu.

At Cinco De Mayo, the sopes are made with a fresh corn shell spackled with refried beans then layered with beans or chicken, red or green sauce, onions and fresh cilantro.

The soft flour quesadillas are stuffed with cheese and Mexican sausage.

The homemade corn quesadilla is fried and stuffed with cheese and either chicken or beef.

The restaurant is BYOB and open Monday-Saturday 10 a.m.-10 p.m. and Sunday 9 a.m.-8 p.m.
